Regulations for the organization and implementation of the master’s admission competition at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science – 2026, annex to the University level admission regulations – official document in PDF format
PROPOSED STUDY PROGRAMS*
Important notes!
* The specializations mentioned above will be offered provided that, during the July admission round, a minimum number of candidates are admitted after the first stage. If the number of candidates admitted to a program is insufficient to financially sustain the program, the faculty reserves the right not to organize it, even if admission has already taken place.
** The mentioned specializations will be organized only if they are included in the Government’s decision on the approval of the specializations/university study programs for the academic year 2026-2027.
1. Admission criteria:
- Graduates with a bachelor’s degree/graduation certificate, regardless of the year of graduation from the bachelor’s program, may apply for a master’s program.
- The admission conditions for candidates with a bachelor’s degree/graduation in a specialization in the field or a specialization related to the field for which the candidate opts, respectively for those coming from other fields, can be found in the Administrative procedure regarding the registration of candidates.
- A certificate of proficiency in an international language is required for the master’s programs. Language certificates issued by BBU faculties and certificates agreed upon by the university are valid, as stated in Annex 1. The Administrative procedure for candidate registration provides details.
- Except for the Data Science in Industry and Society specialization, applicants may submit dossiers for any of the proposed specializations in the three fields administered by the faculty. Applicants may do so either on a fee-paying or budgeted basis, provided they meet the necessary criteria to pursue a specialization funded through this method. However, they can only enroll in a maximum of two study programs simultaneously. A candidate must submit two applications if they want to pursue two specializations in parallel. For Data Science in Industry and Society, candidates must submit an individual application, taking into account both the tuition-paying and tuition-free options.
- A candidate can receive funding from the state budget for only one program of study/specialization. Order no. 3693/2024 (https://www.edu.ro/sites/default/files/fisiere%20articole/OM_3693_2024_1.pdf) allows funding from the state budget for master’s degrees in teaching in the field of education, even if the student has already benefited from a specialization.
- The master’s programs in Cyber Security and the Cloud and Network Infrastructure with High Performance Computing offer two application options: a national application and an EIT application. The national application process adheres to the same requirements as all other master’s programs offered by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Babeș-Bolyai University. The Administrative procedure for candidate registration outlines the prerequisites for EIT Digital applicants.
- Changes to the selected specialization are not permissible following the application deadline.
- Under the same conditions as Romanian citizens, citizens of EU, EEA, and Swiss Confederation countries may participate in the admission process, including payment of tuition fees. The placement and evaluation processes are identical to those utilized for Romanian citizens.
- The relevant ministry facilitates the process of recognizing studies completed abroad. Each candidate is required to provide a document at the time of registration attesting to the initiation of the process to recognize their studies. The responsibility for providing information on the recognition process lies solely with the Center for International Cooperation of Babeș-Bolyai University.
- Applicants from EU third countries can apply for the special places awarded by the faculty, following the Ministry Regulation 6000/15.10.2012 and the regulations of the University. Responsibility for providing information, checking documents, and registering these candidates lies solely with the Center for International Cooperation of Babeș-Bolyai University.
2. Registration
Registration is done exclusively online on the admission platform (https://admitere.ubbcluj.ro). Candidates are responsible for uploading/submission of all documents. By signing the registration form, candidates assume responsibility for the authenticity of the digital/scanned and original documents. For technical details concerning registration, please refer to the Technical procedure for the registration of candidates.
Scanned documents required for registration:
- application form with list of options (signed) – online in the admission platform;
- baccalaureate diploma and transcript of marks (for diplomas without transcript of marks) or equivalent;
- bachelor’s/engineer’s diploma and the supplement or equivalent (including proof of studies, where appropriate);
- birth certificate;
- identity card or passport, where applicable;
- marriage certificate or other documents proving change of name (if applicable);
- standard medical certificate issued by the family doctor, not older than 3 months;
- language proficiency attestation/certificate approved by UBB;
- proof of fee exemption (for enrollment and/or processing fees), issued no more than 3 months ago, in accordance with the provisions of Annex 2 of the UBB Admission Regulations (if applicable);
- declaration on the Master’s degree studies undertaken in the Romanian state university system (Annex 1 completed and signed);
- argumentative portfolio containing a Curriculum Vitae and a scientific and professional career development plan
3. Assessment test
Argumentative portfolio marked with ADMITTED/REJECTED: The candidate must submit an argumentative portfolio consisting of a curriculum vitae (at most 2 pages) and a scientific and professional career development plan (based on the first specialization from the list of options) in the field of mathematics/computer science (at most 2 pages), written in the language of the first specialization in the candidate’s list of options.
Specialized test for candidates who have not graduated in one of the fields related to the chosen specialization. The specializations in the field of Education cannot sustain a specialized test.
4. Classification criteria of candidates admitted after the specialized test
- Candidates that have a degree in the field of study or related fields:
- 75% overall average grade of the years of study;
- 25% grade of the bachelor’s exam.
- In the case of other candidates: the overall admission average is the mark obtained in the specialized test.
5. Tiebreaker
In the event of equal averages, the results will be decided by considering the overall average of the years of study and the overall average of the last year of study.
6. Classification procedure
- Admission to the master’s programs is determined by the study lines (Romanian, English, Hungarian, and German) and the three fields of study administered by the faculty (Mathematics, Computer Science, and Educational Sciences). An overall number of fee-paying and tuition-free places are allocated per field. An exception is the Hungarian line for Mathematics and Computer Science, where the study places are allocated globally on the field. Applicants have the option of choosing an unlimited number of specializations from the field selection. An exception to this rule is the Data Science in Industry and Society specialization, which has its own admission portfolio and is allocated separate seats.
- Applicants who meet the admission requirements with a minimum grade point average of six will be declared admitted in accordance with the preferences indicated during registration and in descending order of average, except for the Hungarian line where places are allocated by field. For the Hungarian line, once the list of admitted candidates (tuituion-free and and tuition-paying) has been drawn up by field in descending order of average, the admitted candidates are allocated to specializations. As per the current Regulation, master’s specializations are established in accordance with the Faculty Council’s minimum admissions requirement.
7. Confirmation of the place
- The confirmation of the study place is done in three phases:
- Phase I: after the first lists with the distribution of candidates by specialization have been posted.
- Phase II: after redistribution of the places not confirmed in the first stage.
- Phase III: after redistribution of the places not confirmed in the second stage.
- The Confirmation Procedure page contains comprehensive information regarding the confirmation process.
8. Confirming a tuition-free place
A student who has been admitted to a tuition-free place can only benefit from the budget grant (study grant) for the customary duration of study of the specialization to which he/she has been admitted to. For students enrolled at a state university who have previously obtained a grant from the state budget for a master’s degree program, the maximum number of years they can continue to receive the grant will be shortened by the number of tuition-free study years they completed previously. The same rule applies to students who have been expelled or who have withdrawn from their studies.
State funding for the standard course of study requires that each academic year be completed under the state-funded program only once. Any other situation, except for social cases, requires the student to complete the academic year as a paying student. If a student withdraws from studies after the start of the academic year from a state-funded position, the student is considered to have benefited from one year of state funding during the standard duration of study.
As an exception, candidates who are currently enrolled in or have completed a state-funded master’s degree program—other than a teaching (didactic) master’s program—may receive state funding for a teaching (didactic) master’s degree program.
9. Taxes
In accordance with the Babeș-Bolyai University Admission Regulations, the following fees are charged for participation in the admission exam:
- Processing fee (50 RON) is charged to cover organizational and communication costs;
- Application fee (300 RON);
- Confirmation fee (200 RON) is charged to confirm the spot (state-funded/tuition-paying) obtained through the exam and is paid at the time of confirmation.
The admission fee consists of the application fee and the processing fee. The categories of applicants eligible for partial or full exemptions from these fees are listed in Annex 2 of the UBB Admission Regulations.
In case of withdrawal, fees paid are non-refundable.
Fees can only be paid via the online platform https://admitere.ubbcluj.ro.
