Class Recorder — Privacy Policy

1. About the App

Class Recorder is a research tool for teachers and educators, developed at Babeș-Bolyai University, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. It is installed and operated by teachers in supervised classroom sessions to record students (ages 7–14) reading aloud in Romanian, in order to build a research dataset for studying reading fluency and dyslexia screening. Students do not install or use the app independently.

2. Data We Collect

When you use Class Recorder, we collect:

  • Voice recordings — audio of the student reading aloud
  • Reader profile — nickname (chosen by the student), age, gender, and grade
  • Book details — title, source/author, and page being read
  • Account email — only if the teacher signs in to enable uploads
  • Crash logs and diagnostics — collected via Firebase Crashlytics to help us identify and fix bugs. These logs do not contain voice recordings or reader profile data.
  • Device identifier — a Firebase-generated installation ID used solely to associate crash reports with this app installation. It is not advertising-related and is not used to track you across other apps.

We do not collect real names, phone numbers, precise location, or any other personal identifiers beyond the information listed above.

3. How We Use Your Data

Collected data is used exclusively for:

  • Building a Romanian reading fluency research dataset
  • Developing and validating dyslexia screening algorithms
  • Academic research and publication

Data is never used for advertising, profiling, or sold to third parties.

4. Where Data Is Stored

  • On-device — recordings are stored locally until uploaded. They are excluded from Android cloud backup and device-to-device transfer.
  • HuggingFace (huggingface.co) — voice recordings and reader profile metadata are uploaded to a research dataset repository
  • Firebase (Google Cloud) — authentication state, account email, and recording metadata are stored in Firestore for upload coordination. Crash logs are stored in Firebase Crashlytics.

All data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS/TLS.

5. Children’s Privacy

Class Recorder is a teacher-operated tool. Students do not download, install, or use the app independently — the teacher installs the app on their own device, configures each session, and supervises the recording. The app is not intended for direct use by children.

Teachers are responsible for obtaining appropriate consent from parents or guardians before students participate, in accordance with their school and institutional policies. No recording is made without the teacher explicitly starting a session.

Students are identified only by a nickname they choose themselves — we never collect or store real names of minors.

6. Data Retention & Deletion

Recordings are retained as part of the research dataset for the duration of the research project. You may request deletion of your data at any time by contacting us (see below) or by visiting our data deletion page.

Local recordings on the device can be deleted at any time from the app’s queue screen.

7. Your Rights

Under GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Access the data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Withdraw consent at any time
