Young Women in Technology Summer Internship Pilot

Context:

To increase the participation of women in WBG’s IT workforce, a summer internship program is being piloted in ITS to establish a pipeline of entry level work for college students.

Objectives of the internship

  1. Enhance the educational experience of college students through practical and guided hands-on exposure and involvement in the World Bank Group’s (WBG) corporate IT projects.
  2. Provide students with an exposure to the working environment of a multilateral organization and a better understanding of the World Bank’s goals and activities.
  3. Establish a pipeline of entry level work to increase the participation of women in WBG’s IT workforce.

Functions/Duties and Output Expectations

Under the direct supervision of the relevant team lead/manager, the intern is expected to perform the following tasks (depending on their assignment):

Information/Data Analyst

  1. Calibrate the search algorithm by reviewing publications (e.g., environmental, trade, competition, economics), manually attach metadata tags, configure the auto tagging software, test the algorithm and recalibrate as needed.
  2. Develop metrics to measure search performance.
  3. Assist in the development and refinement search test cases.

Business Analyst

  1. Organize and coordinate business requirements gathering workshops.
  2. Participate in gathering information to help with creating user stories and test plans.
  3. Circle back to business users with documented requirements and seek their feedback and concurrence.
  4. Assist in testing applications.

IT Analyst

  1. Liaise with IT developers to help them better visualize business requirements.
  2. Help IT developers by working on draft mock ups.
  3. Develop and test programs.
  4. Help business and IT team with data loads, data mapping and data analysis.
  5. Help Project Manager/ Business Leads is preparing sleek presentations.
  6. Help in doing research/proof of concept on how to better use open source widgets or free modules available in the market.

Skills and Requirements:

  1. College student entering junior or senior year in October 2017
  2. Pursuing a degree relating to in engineering, computer science, and mathematics
  3. Programming skills in any of the following programming languages/technologies a plus: JAVA, .NET, C/C++, Sharepoint, web development (e.g., Angular JS), mobile development tools
  4. Passion to work with data sets
  5. Technologically savvy
  6. Advanced Excel skills
  7. Project management
  8. Ability to work independently
  9. Analytical skills and strong decision making capabilities
  10. Excellent communication skills
  11. Ability to set priorities and handle multiple tasks
  12. Must have a high level of proficiency in English: written and verbal

Duration of Assignment:

Internship range: July 1st – Sept. 30th;
Internship duration: 6-8 weeks

Airfare allowance: $1,500.00
Housing allowance: up to $150.00 per day
Rate: $17.00 per hour net; $136.00 per day net of taxes

Local Recruitment:

Rate: $20.00 per hour gross; $160.00 per day gross income
